Photographing in low light conditions is always a challenge. In Bills Cafe in Bury St. Edmonds the light was low but the atmosphere was lovely. The decor I thought was an interesting mixture of modern factory chic and old style. I have to say it had the best strawberry milkshake I’ve ever tasted.
After much deliberation and cogitation over a new Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens or a new Nikkor 28mm 1.8 lens….. I decided to go for the 28 to give me that extra 7mm wide angle and differentiation from my light and most often used 50mm. The extra cost, weight, bulk, similarity and reported back focusing issues/poor quality control all counted against the Sigma. I like the idea of the 1.4 and a 35mm but would I lug it about as an everyday lens when the 50 is much lighter…
So now I have a 28mm what sort of images can I get? The images on this page were created in the first weekend of owning the new lens.
Reportage: Many photographers used to use the 35mm or slightly less common 28mm to do photojournalism where the subject and surroundings can be captured in one shot. Maybe this shot is a bit too “real”?
Multiple people in one frame – I seldom got this with the 50mm and certainly not the 85 or 105mm.

Took some photos before during and after an hours walk at the weekend in the forrest. Currently going through a matt effect phase. Hopefully not too “instagrammed”!
These first 2 pictures were made this bank holiday Monday while the kids were just fooling around on the couch with cushions and blankets. The originals have subtle nice skin tones but there is something better about the monochrome images. I’m not sure what the fashion is for monochrome these days but the cream just works for me in these two images where I want soft tones. Whereas the second 2 I think black and white monochrome works better… Second couple of monochrome images from a walk we did recently. The originals were pretty simple in colour but somehow it was still distracting from the main subjects so I’ve chosen B/W for them.
